THE JESUIT MISSIONS OF THE GUARANIS

The Guaraní Jesuit Missions (San Ignacio Miní, Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, Santa María la Mayor, in Argentina; San Miguel de las Misiones, in Brazil) as weIl asthe jesuit Missions of Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, in Paraguay are included in the list ofthe UNESCO World Heritage. These places are, therefore, protected by the agreement on the protection of the worid, cultural and natural beritage that was adopted by the 1972 UNESCO General Conference, and are the object of an international campaign fostering their restoration, enbancement and promotion. In 1979, the UNESCO General Director launched a joint programme supported by Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, for the protection of these missions. A Plan of Action was worked out in order to, among other activities, create a museum of the Jesuit property; handle the ruins, explore the archaeological sites and prepare geographic maps. This work is publisbed with the aim of disseminating this aspect of Mankind´s Heritage and thus contributing to its protection.
